Rehabilitation using light therapy
Philips VitalSky is a light therapy system that simulates natural light. This luminotherapy technology promotes the natural sleep/wake rhythm of patients with the objective to restore their circadian rhythm (sleep cycle). The diffusion of natural light is used to stop the production of melatonin, a "sleep hormone" that is naturally produced by the body and whose main function is to regulate biological rhythms. Indeed, the secretion of melatonin dereases in the case of light and is stimulated when it is dark. The VitalSky system has an automated day / night program, which can be adapted to suit each patient, depending on their age or length of clinic stay.
In practical terms, the cycle begins with the awakening phase simulating dawn that induces a gradual awakening. This is followed by a high intensity phase from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm approximately aimed at boosting energy. The last phase produces a decrease in brightness to prepare for bedtime around 10 pm. The cycle can be tailored to suit individual needs.
In addition to white light, VitalSky can also play calming nature scenes in full-color to create an immersive and relaxing environment.
