Speech therapy program

Evaluation

After examination of a patient’s medical history, the speech therapist assesses communication, oral and written language, speech, voice and / or swallowing capacities as well as disorder impact on the patient's daily life.

Re-education

When necessary, the speech therapist provides a personalized rehabilitation program targeted to restore, reorganize, and / or compensate communication deficits, in order to regain a satisfactory quality of life.

Language disorder rehabilitation is done through exercises using oral or written supports, as well as computer software (computer, Ipad). Alternative and enhanced communication methods are also put into place.

The program includes exercises to strengthen bucco-linguo-facial and laryngeal motor skills to assist and correct speech, voice, swallowing and facial paralysis disorders. Electrotherapy is also an option implemented to improve swallowing ability.

Swallowing disorders

Due to swallowing disorders and in order to facilitate the passage of food from the mouth to the esophagus, it is sometimes necessary to adapt a patient’s diet to include specific food textures at mealtimes.

"Finely chopped (diced)" meals

Meals principally comprised of diced food elements (less than one centimeter), which can be easily crushed with a fork or the tongue, of varying consistency.

"Smooth-blend" meals

Meals comprised of blended food elements (finely mashed) of homogenous consistency, without any solid pieces.

Other adjustments such as liquid thickeners or protein-enriched meals may also be necessary to maintain the appropriate energy intake.
